Keeping superhero bedding in tip top shape requires periodic cleaning. Cleaning your superhero comforter does not need to be difficult and we’ve put together some basic steps to follow.
Depending on how much time your little crime fighter spends playing on top of his comforter will generally dictate how often it should be washed — that and any inadvertent stains or spills.
A general rule of thumb with normal wear is every 3 months or so — still depending on use.
Understanding the Fabric
The fabric content of the comforter, quilt or bedding will determine whether or not is it safe to pre-treat stains for heavy soiled areas or spills.
Some pre-treatment products MAY actually fade your superhero bedding so a good place to start is with the manufacturer’s directions on the label sewn onto the bedding or with the original packaging.
A tip for drying your crime fighter comforter is to add a tennis ball or clean tennis shoe to your dryer to keep any micro-fiber or polyester fill from clumping in the corners and around stitching.
An important point to remember is that the stitching is usually the first to show wear so using a gentle wash cycle will aid in keeping the stitching in place longer. High agitation will shorten the lifespan of not only your stitching but the fabric colors as well.
Finally, most comforters and quilts use a fiber fill consisting of 100 percent polyester or a microfiber polyester blend. These man-made materials can melt under excessive heat so placing your comforter in a hot dryer may cause bunching, compress the fill material or damage the comforter. It’s best to use a low setting or air dry and then use a low setting for fluffing.
Comforters made from microfiber or polyester should not be ironed either — a hot iron may also melt or degrade the material.
